That’s what I do for a living. Oh no, I don’t sing.
How much ever I try I still don’t understand this world. May be it’s the complex and layered us that fit in perfectly inside it. And yes we can actually fool you. We have done that a million times.
Over the years ‘*’ has become the most important part of any advertising communication you see. It’s really weird because this small tiny line with an asterisks in corner of the page, is easily ignored by the you. All you are interested is in the *big bold* (mostly delusional) claim that we want you to see, we want you to understand. All you care is about who is selling it, what clothes that celebrity is wearing, how cute or hot he/she looks.
Am not saying the products are not worth it, or that they are not innovative. But with such a congested Market, and companies sales targets combined with our skill of words and art make you so confused that you are forced to live in a fantasy world created by us for our clients, yes not for you my dear consumer. Yes you matter to me, because you are the only the one who are gonna buy my shit.. errr products because you know it am better than the others out there.
The Indian and world advertising has evolved a lot. They make each and everything so aspirational that even we fall for it and even burn our pockets. Ok fine I agree you and might know what we are buying, but we not even considered a TG most times. We are not considered the masses. How many of us do you think use the products we advertise or work on? Best example would be how many of you would go n study at IIPM?
Cigarettes and alcohol are one of the largest money spinners got the govt., and they bloody try to downplay it. Well because they can’t advertise really because they can’t but does that really effect them? Now cigarettes come with “SMOKING KILLS” is big bold letters and also comes equipped with a picture of the lungs. But the branding is so strong that you don’t see it. I still don’t get the point of it being there. If you are so bloody concerned take them out of the Market. Yes you won’t do that and we will keep find ways to advertise those.
The first and foremost rule of advertising is that SEX sells. And it does sell. Well almost everything. Weather it’s goDaddy or our stupid vaio laptops to everything, oh even condoms.
Yes the every product is aspirational or we make it so, but do you really need them? What you see or hear is not true. Because every around you now is a perception, a story which is told to you, wait, which is forced on to you..the same way as others decide what you should be doing in life.
The whole concept of word-of-mouth still works, and I would say that’s the only pure form of advertising one can find. Maybe it’s about time I figure out more stuff on how I can fool you again.
